This week Box published its 2026 State of AI in the Enterprise survey of 1,640 IT decision-makers across four countries. One pair of numbers does the work. Ninety-six percent say their AI agents need company-specific content to be useful. Only thirty-six percent have connected agents to trusted internal content across their use cases. Nearly everyone knows the agent is only as good as what it can read. Almost no one has done the reading.
Why It Matters
For a year the AI decision felt like a model decision. Which foundation model, which agent platform, which vendor. That is mostly settled, because everyone now has roughly the same frontier models. So the next move looks obvious: connect the agent to your company’s knowledge. It is not. An agent wired into an ungoverned file store is worse than one wired to nothing, because it repeats your company’s most outdated assumptions with frontier-model confidence, and the room cannot tell it is wrong.
The Box data shows the divide in dollars. Among leading-edge firms, half report meaningful ROI. Among early-stage firms, one in nine. The leaders did not connect more content. They connected the content they could stand behind and left the rest walled off. That thirty-six percent is not a backlog to clear. It is the share of companies that treated it as a decision.
The Decision
The question this week is not which agent platform to standardize on. It is whether one slice of your company’s knowledge is trustworthy enough that you would let an agent act on it in front of a customer. If the honest answer is no, more capability changes nothing.
What To Do This Week
- Pick one agent use case you run. List the five to ten documents it would have to trust. Are they current, and is there one authoritative version of each?
- Ask whoever owns that content one question. If an agent quoted this to a customer tomorrow, would you stand behind it?
- Find one place where two conflicting versions of the same truth live in your systems. That contradiction is what an agent surfaces at random, with full confidence.
What Not To Do
Do not point an agent at your entire file store to show you have connected it. It will cite your stalest, wrongest document as confidently as your best one. Do not hand this to IT as a plumbing ticket, either. Deciding which knowledge is authoritative is a business judgment, not an integration task. And do not let a vendor sell you a smarter agent as the fix. The gap is not capability. It is the trust and governance of what sits underneath.
